eCommerce is both a multi-faceted and fast-paced discipline, requiring expertise not only in Web technology but in systems integration, direct commerce operations, merchandising/marketing, and a host of other sub-disciplines. No one book can hope to cover all of this in depth, and eCommerce Best Practices certainly does not. What it does do is present a reasonably good 360-degree overview of the business.But don't turn to this book expecting real depth anywhere, and in some cases, the lapses are surprising and disappointing. The best case in point is probably Web Analytics, a vital aspect of running a successful and competitive eCommerce site. In a five-page chapter that does an OK job of covering general methodology, there is no reference whatsoever to any Web Analytics products or services, and no examples of how Online Analytical Processing engines, Data Mining tools, or Business Performance Management tools are actually used.Another example: there are three pages on User/Consumer Product Ratings/Reviews on a Website, but no mention of the fact that many sites employing "Best Practices" use third-party tools to support these functions, and of course, no examples of such third-party tools.For readers who know nothing about the subject, this is an adequate introduction. For anyone looking for guidance on actually implementing Best Practices, it falls woefully short.

As pointed in some other reviews the book is a good general guide especially for someone not having done this before. The index covers a lot of the right things but is a bit lacking in actually running the business and thinking about the operating model and how ecommerce should be part of your business and tied into your marketing communications strategy, supply chain strategies etc. I would have maybe named the book "Best practices to implement eCommerce internet technologies". However, if you can only read one book on the topic, this one should help you get all the basics right and once you learn things from actually running the site you can get deeper into what it should mean for your overall business and how it relates to your overall operating model for the company. If someone knows a good book that would fill that "other side" picture with this, let me know :)

Hello,The book arrived very quickly, after 1 or 2 weeks only. Unfortunately I thought this book contains programming tools or code helping to make ecommerce safer.So I misunderstood the title.After all I got another book which is better (and thicker) than I thought so this book might be still helpful for general stuff...If it was the book I thought off, it would have been perfect...Tomagic

The book provides a good high-level introduction of the critical success factors to leveraging eCommerce methodologies. I would greatly recommend this book as consensus building tool at the executive level. Aspects like the glossary of eCommerce terminology and insightful best practices have enable me to better position eCommerce projects for success.The broad range of topics "a mile wide approach" is applicable to medium size and large scale projects. It is apparent after reading that the author has "been there, done that" and knows how to position an eCommerce project within the enterprise.This book was the perfect gift for one of my best clients. The book helped to provide parameters around what it means to engage in an eCommerce project.
